A few days ago I was diligently studying for my neuroscience exam (read: not perusing my e-mail) when, out of the blue I got an e-mail! Occasionally they offer us as medical students discounts on tickets for events around town. Most recently we had the opportunity to get Razorback tickets, but unfortunately I didn't get over to the office quick enough and they sold out, but I digress. The e-mail I am referring to was offering discounted tickets to Wicked at the Robinson Center here in downtown Little Rock. An amazing location, and an even more amazing musical.
It occurs to me now that perhaps not everyone here has seen, or heard of, Wicked. It is a prequel of sorts to the classic Wizard of Oz story. I was lucky enough to see Wicked in Manhattan on Broadway, but unfortunately Jenn has not had the chance to see this amazing musical. We said that as soon as we got the chance we would get her to see it, I mean after all, she already has the soundtrack memorized.
So now we are caught up to this moment in time when I get an e-mail selling discount tickets to see Wicked. Victory is at hand! I was all set to head over to the office to purchase these tickets when it occurred to me that perhaps I should check to see when the show was. It is an evening show on November 11th, 2010. Perfect, a nice winter treat for my wife! Then it hit me. Well two things hit me. Have you ever been so excited about an event that when you purchase a gallon of milk with an expiration date past the event it gets real? Well people, they are selling tickets to a show for AFTER our first child will be born. Woah.
No problem right? That is exciting but doesn't change anything. Oh but it does. For the last few years Jenn and I have been blessed with the freedom to do whatever we want, whenever we want to. Dinner? Sure! Manhattan for the night? Absolutely! Everyone who thinks they can go see Wicked in November take one step forward, not so fast Jon Pagan. Thats right people, our expected due date is November 2nd, 2010. A mere 9 days before the show. So alas, we passed on the tickets. So for the first time, our child influenced our life in a very tangible way.
Isn't that amazing? There is absolutely no other reason that I'd rather not be able to take my wife out to a night on the town. My child, will be here in 174 days. My child. So for the first time of many to come, our world has been changed by this little life.
Little one, you rock my world and I can't wait to meet you, and tell you how you've already changed us for good...

We just had dentist appointments today; afterward we scheduled our next ones. The kid will BE GOING to the next dentist appointment! Woah!
"But because I knew you, I have been changed for good."
Never heard the song before, but I sat and listened to it all. I really, really liked it. And while the words certainly work well within the context of the play, they are particularly cogent to the subject you were discussing: children.
I think every parent can relate to what you talk about. While some many not realize it at first and may even resist it, inevitably you can't help but be drawn into the life you helped to create. It's an amazing and wonderful experience, and it will change you forever ... for good.
I am a much better man for having you and your brother in my life. If your child(ren) can bring you even a tenth of the joy that you and Jeremy brought to me, you will be truly blessed.
That is so interesting you post a blog on this subject, as I have been wanting to see Wicked now for about 3 years. Tim is finally taking me to see it in June on our anniversary. Of course we can't just go on a whim anymore. There are babysitters to find, diaper bags to pack, pack-n-plays to haul.
It is kind of cool when your kid influences your plans, as long as they don't get in the way TOO much.
I say you should have bought the tickets and made Grammy Pagan stay and watch the baby :)
Two things:
One, glad to see you blog, Jonathan. You shouldn't let something something as trivial as medical school get in the way of more important activities. I mean, c'mon?
Two, Erin - all they have to do is ask and Grammy will be there, ready to take care of the grandchild (note the gender neutral reference :-) I suspect we'll need to get a frequent fliers card soon so we can rack up the miles. When grammy wants to go, grammy wants to go!
Jonathan Love your posting...it brought me to tears as you speak about children as I am making some life long changes.
I am so excited to be a grandma for the first time it seems so unreal that both of my Son's are having thier first chilren and I am here to be a part of Grandparenting.
Love you both and thank you for the intruduction to a perfect song......Mom
@Kelly - That is crazy huh? Its amazing how fast things are going already, before we know it the cousins will be playing!
@Dad - Thanks for the comment Dad! I'm so glad that you feel that Jer and I changed you for better. I can honestly say, that its because of you that I even feel the least bit prepared to be a father to this young one...
@Erin - Totally true, and if this weren't the first baby, I bet wed be all over the Grammy sitting. However, I'm not sure if Jenn will be quite ready to leave the baby after a 9 days :) I'm so glad you get to see Wicked! When I saw it I actually got front row center seats, on broadway! It was one of the highlight experiences of my younger days. Can't wait to hear what you think!
@Mom- You are welcome for the song intro, I'm so glad you liked it. Pretty crazy that you're going from 0 to 2 in no time flat huh? Well our little one can't wait to meet you :)
